Introduction

The UPM Medical Biotechnology Research Group (UPM-MBRG) in collaboration with the National Bioethics Council and Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) will be organising the Embracing Biosafety, Biosecurity and Bioethics in Research Seminar 2017 at the Faculty of Biotechnology and Biomolecular Sciences, UPM.

Recognising the increasingly multi-disciplinary and expansive progression of scientific research, this seminar is organised to introduce participants to the various principles and acts pertaining to issues of biosafety, biosecurity and bioethics at national and international levels. The tentative programme promises to provide a greater understanding towards the various aspects often overlooked by researchers, especially in the development of intellectual properties, products, as well as clinical trials.

Research that involve GMOs are subjected to Malaysian Biosafety Act 2007 which has been enforced since 2007. However, most researchers are still unaware of this act. Additionally, the National Science Council of Malaysia has passed the Malaysian Code of Responsible Conduct in Research to support the Malaysian Biosafety Act 2007. The proceedings of this seminar are sanctioned by the Malaysian Biosafety and Biosecurity Association as well as the Department of Biosecurity, Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (NRE).

Objectives

Participants are expected to gain inputs on the following:

  • Malaysian Biosafety Act 2007

  • Malaysian Code of Responsible Conduct in Research

  • Current issues on Biosafety, Biosecurity and Bioethics

  • Application procedures to relevant agencies for research
